The objective for the iWISE Olympiad’s drawing and painting category is to harness artistic expression as a powerful tool for environmental education, awareness, and creative problem-solving. It challenges students to not only express their creative potential but also to demonstrate their knowledge and awareness of diverse and current environmental trends.
1. Foster environmental literacy through creativity
– Encourage contemplation: The category should prompt students to reflect deeply on contemporary environmental issues, moving beyond surface-level understanding.
– Evaluate comprehension: The artwork should serve as a method for the Olympiad to assess the students’ grasp of different environmental trends, such as climate change, deforestation, and plastic pollution.
2. Promote artistic innovation and communication
– Catalyze action: Art can be a potent catalyst for change, communicating complex issues with emotional impact that can inspire both the artist and the audience to take action.
– Encourage diverse perspectives: By allowing for self-expression through art, the competition can reveal students’ unique interpretations and emotional connections to the environment, which traditional writing-based assessments might miss.
3. Develop ethical and sustainable creative practices
– Integrate sustainable materials: The category should encourage students to use recycled, upcycled, or naturally sourced materials in their projects, promoting resourcefulness and reinforcing the competition’s core message.
– Explore multidisciplinary thinking: The process of creating artwork on environmental issues can foster a transdisciplinary way of thinking, connecting art with scientific knowledge and social awareness.
4. Increase public awareness
– Disseminate a message: By showcasing student artwork, the Olympiad provides a platform for young voices to raise public consciousness about environmental challenges and solutions in an accessible and engaging way.
