The objective for the iWISE Olympiad’s photography category is to empower young photographers to develop, test, and showcase their skills on a global platform, creating work that is both technically proficient and creatively compelling. The competition will focus on fostering artistic growth and giving students the opportunity to gain valuable international exposure.

– Encourage skill exploration and development: Provide a structured and inspiring environment for teen photographers to experiment with and refine their technical abilities and artistic vision. This includes encouraging them to work with various styles, from photojournalism to fine art, and different techniques like lighting and composition.

– Evaluate photography against a high standard: Allow young photographers to test their skills and receive feedback from a panel of experienced judges, giving them an honest assessment of their work’s quality and potential for improvement.

– Build a professional-quality portfolio: Guide students in curating and presenting a series of images (at least 10) that demonstrate their storytelling and artistic capabilities. This practice is vital for building a portfolio that can open doors to future opportunities.

– Provide global exposure and recognition: Offer a unique, international platform for students to exhibit their talent. This exposure gives them an audience they would not otherwise have and can serve as a stepping stone for wider recognition in the photographic community.

– Foster creative expression and self-confidence: Create an opportunity for students to express their unique perspectives and find their individual “voice” as photographers. By receiving recognition, they can build confidence in their creative abilities.

Evaluation criteria

The judging process will focus on a range of criteria to ensure a comprehensive assessment of the students’ work. Finalists should submit their collection of photos in a digital presentation format, such as a PDF of a PowerPoint, as specified by the iWISE Olympiad.

– Technical excellence: The quality of the image as a product of the camera. Judges will look for proper focus, exposure, and lighting. They will also consider if the post-processing enhances the image rather than detracting from it.

– Composition and arrangement: The intentional placement of elements within the frame to create a visually pleasing and impactful image. This includes the effective use of elements such as leading lines, the rule of thirds, and perspective.

– Creativity and originality: The ability to present a unique or fresh perspective on a subject. This includes the originality of the concept and how inventively the photographer has used techniques to realize their vision.

– Storytelling and impact: The photograph’s ability to communicate a narrative, evoke emotion, or engage the viewer. A strong, cohesive collection of images can tell a more powerful story.

– Consistency and vision: While showcasing a diverse range of skills is encouraged, the overall body of work should demonstrate a recognizable style or a coherent artistic vision, as is expected in a professional portfolio.

– Relevance to context (if applicable): While the iWISE photography category has “No theme,” entries in the future may be judged on how well they align with a given topic. This shows a student can follow instructions and produce work for specific clients or contexts.
